Many eagles and other raptors come to the center unable to fly because of impaired vision, tremors, or loss of balance due to lead toxicity from ingesting carrion left behind by hunters or fishermen using lead bullets and lures.
The center uses a lengthy protocol that includes chelation therapy to remove lead from the bloodstream, vitamin supplements, conditioning in special flight cages, physical therapy, and a diet that includes live prey testing before release to ensure long-term survival. To confirm if our treatment protocols are working, we've partnered with the Department of Environmental Conservation to outfit eagles with GPS trackers just before their release to monitor their progress. So far, all post-lead study eagles are still out there flying free!
